How do you determine your CD rates? – 31. August, 2009

We allow each branch some latitude in setting their own CD rates, but by and large, we collectively manage the process through our Asset and Liability Committee. It is the responsibility of the Committee to analyze all aspects of the bank’s balance sheet and try to match up both the rates paid on CDs and rates earned on loans and bank investments.

The difference between those rates is calculated as a spread, more commonly referred to as our margin. The bank’s margin is what ultimately drives earnings, which are in turn evaluated by regulators and shareholders. In short, we try to strike a balance between a fair return to depositors and meeting required and expected earnings for the bank.

Are you going to open a bank in Chadron Nebraska? If so, when will it be open and where? – 31. August, 2009

Our having a location in Chadron has been an ongoing consideration for a number of years. We think it makes sense long term and when the timing is right, we’ll apply to branch into Chadron. I don’t know exactly where we will locate, but be assured that it will be convenient for our customers!

Why are there only banks in Nebraska and South Dakota. I think extending your branches into the Kansas City area would be a fabulous idea! – 31. August, 2009

I appreciate your question. Each state has its own set of branching laws and Kansas would require us to buy a bank in the state before being allowed to branch. This, as well as the fact that Kansas City is outside of our strategic growth footprint, makes it unlikely that we will expand there.
